lessons learned

Squeals of laughter emit
childeren with pails at water's edge
The world is safe
innocence fills even the adults
with tranquility and play.

Exhaling,
feeling the sun kiss my body,
I lay and watch.

Memories flood of a little freckled, red-headed girl,
splashing water back and forth
with Mommy and Daddy
brother joining in.
Fearless,
it was wonderful.
All children should feel this free.

Littlest cousin shouts for me to look,
back in present,
visions of a sandy crock appear.

Well formed, claws, teeth and all,
children wide eyed and cautious approach it,
artist smiling broodly with son,
encouraging young ones not to be afraid.

Pictures being taken,
Albums soon will have new additions,
this is how it should be.
Moments frozen in time
for young and old alike.

We drag our sleepy sun
slothed bodies into the cool waters.
Slumbered nerve cells electrified
to life.

As a school of fish we swim,
then near the big slide something so
angelic appeared.

The small girl laughing,
peach fuzz just gracing her frail head,
age difficult to guess,
you could see her scars and troubles.

It took my breath away,
as family and friends cheered her on,
with all her strength she climbed that ladder,
then with the broadest smile,
glided down,
Splash.

Then this little fighting mermaid
plopped right up
face radiating her joy.

Felt a tear come to my eye,
'Good for you' my heart shouted,
A lesson learned that day.

Live, love and seek
joy in life.
Don't take a moment for granted.

This day brought forth
memories of childhood,
friendship and bonding,
sand art,
a champion
time felt frozen for a bit.

Alas it had to end,
Sun shifting to bow down
The moon waiting to takes it's place.

Pulling out of the drive,
I may have left the sand,
not empty though,
more filled than when I entered.
Mental scrapbook filled,
soul renewed,
Optimism's glass filled.
